Stressful life events

It is common for people who are experiencing high levels of stress to look for activities that provide escape, comfort and relief. Poor understanding of gambling outcomes

Some people believe that there is a pattern or schedule of payouts from gambling. This can lead to increased risk as they may gamble for extended periods of time with the belief that they will eventually win. In fact, payouts from gambling occur randomly and there is no way of predicting when or if you will win.

Poor social support

Some forms of gambling, such as playing slot machines, can provide "escape" or mindlessness types of experiences, and therefore individuals who are lacking in social supports may use gambling to help cope with their problems.
